Jahn und Jahn and Encounter are pleased to present WE KNOW YOU DON’T SEE US, a solo exhibition of new works by Catarina Dias in the gallery's (Projectspace).
Catarina Dias is an artist whose work embodies the fluidity between word and image, erosion and assemblage, the inner and outer world. Across a variety of mediums, her practice can be characterized by its dense yet contemplative nature, complicating processes of seeing through her sensitive pictorial language. In this exhibition, Dias subverts the manner in which memory, identity, and the passage of time are constructed and perceived. Dias’s compositions are carefully crafted, combining different techniques and materials, from photomontage to painting and collage to printing. The complex intertwining of these mediums, alongside their multifaceted subject matter, imbues the works with fragmentary and juxtaposing narratives. This specific approach to making simultaneously creates a sense of depth and urgency, a materiality that saturates the work with rawness and vulnerability, as if the images she depicts are barely contained within the paper. Constantly concerned with the relationship between image and text, the artist uses both remembered and archived words and phrases. Whilst these texts appear to provide a decipherable and immediately readable visual anchor, in fact, on closer inspection, they further add to this sense of unease and disorientation. Dias utilizes imagery of destruction derived from newspapers and magazine covers, posing questions about what is real and imagined, past and present. This series of evocative works questions the manner in which chance and violence are often connected. The unsettling and jarring images act as a startling reminder of the fragility of our existence.
