Fuchssteiner’s subject matter is a type of painting immanently formed by diverse heterogeneous structures, fantastically turbulent visual abundance, and dialectically interwoven proliferation and order: as if painting corresponded with the ontological principle of nature and its self-organisation. Shapes which divide, multiply, mature. The pictorial event – not symbolic, not depicting – happens, in a sense, analogously to the physical nature of our cultural existence. The personal – aspects of lived reality and dreams as it were – are integrated into the aesthetic structure of the composition: the subject asserts itself as a conscious part of the whole.
Fuchssteiner paints the imagery of a form of being which cannot be found in our fully differentiated, utilitarian world, but which in art is a reality overflowing with meaning.
Fuchssteiner shows that artworks are objects which shape the indefinite nature of our world. And Fuchssteiner understands his craft. He sensualises thought, reconciles paradoxes, and paints images that are beautiful in an unorthodox way. In 2018 he was awarded an Art Prize by the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
Text by Friedrich G. Scheuer, 2018
Drawing, painting and abstraction between abstraction and representation. The complex work of Georg Fuchssteiner (b. 1982) reflects his continous curiosity and openness to art, music and literature. He makes paintings that deal with personal experiences and impressions while also referencing fantastical imagery. As well as realistically worked paintings he makes works that tend towards abstraction. In these paintings and drawings, figurative elements appear within the densely pictorial space.
