Catarina Dias is an artist whose work embodies the fluidity between word and image, erosion and assemblage, the inner and outer world. Her practice is characterized by its dense yet contemplative nature. She complexifies the processes of perception through her sensitive pictorial language, which combines different plastic languages, such as cinematographic imagery and poetic text, using a variety of techniques and materials, such as paper or fabric. This complex intertwining, along with their multifaceted subject matter, imbues her works with fragmentary and juxtaposing narratives. Her specific approach simultaneously evokes a sense of depth and urgency, saturating the work with rawness and vulnerability, as if the images or words she depicts defy containment. The artist incorporates both archived words, phrases, and poems from her own lexicon, and while these texts may appear to offer a decipherable and readable visual anchor, in fact, they further add a sense of unease and disorientation.
The work of Catarina Dias has been exhibited at EDP Foundation - Museu da Electricidade, Lisbon; Appleton Square, Lisbon; Espaço Avenida, Lisbon; Uppercut, Lisbon; Pavilhão Preto - Galerias Municipais de Lisboa, Lisbon; Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas, Elvas; Galeria Municipal do Porto, Porto; or Ar Sólido, Lisbon; among others. Her works are part of the collection of Foundation MAAT / EDP; António Cachola Collection; Portuguese State Contemporary Art Collection – CACE; EGEAC/CML Collection; Centro de Arte Oliva – Norlinda e José Lima Collection; Ilídio Pinho Foundation Collection; among others.
